Visualizing Solubilization by a Realistic Particle Model in Chemistry Education

2019

An application for the visualization of the mixing process of two different types of structureless interacting particles is presented. The application allows to demonstrate on a qualitative basis, as well as by quantitatively monitoring the time evolution of the fractions of aggregates of different sizes, that the formation of a homogeneous mixture is the result of favorable solute-solvent interactions as well as by temperature. It is suggested that, along with the use of suitable macroscopic examples, visualizations by the present application are useful in elucidating concepts related to miscibility/solubility. The application is based on a two-dimensional realistic dynamic model where ato…

Granular chains for the assessment of thermal stress in slender structures

2015

Slender beams subjected to compressive stress are common in civil and mechanical engineering. The rapid in-situ measurement of this stress may prevent structural anomalies. In this paper, we describe the coupling mechanism between highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs) propagating along an L-shaped granular system and a beam in contact with the granular medium. We evaluate the use of HNSWs as a tool to measure stress in thermally loaded structures and to estimate the neutral temperature, i.e. the temperature at which this stress is null. We investigated numerically and experimentally one and two L-shaped chains of spherical particles in contact with a prismatic beam subjected to heat. We f…

On the coupling dynamics between thermally stressed beams and granular chains

2015

The in-situ measurement of thermal stress in slender beams, or long continuous welded rails, may prevent structural anomalies. With this aim, we investigated the coupling dynamics between a beam and the highly nonlinear solitary waves propagating along a straight granular chain in contact with the beam. We hypothesized that these waves can be used to measure the stress of thermally loaded structures, or to infer the neutral temperature, i.e., the temperature at which this stress is null. We studied numerically and experimentally the mechanical interaction of one and two straight chains of spherical particles in contact with a prismatic beam that is subjected to heat. The results show that c…

On the Use of L-shaped Granular Chains for the Assessment of Thermal Stress in Slender Structures

2014

Slender beams subjected to compressive load are common in civil engineering. The rapid in-situ measurement of this stress may help preventing structural anomalies. Search for Anomalous Production of Events with a Photon, Jet, b-quark Jet, and Missing Transverse Energy

2009

We present a signature-based search for the anomalous production of events containing a photon, two jets, of which at least one is identified as originating from a b quark, and missing transverse energy ((sic)(T)). The search uses data corresponding to 2.0 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity from p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 1.96 TeV, collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. From 6.697 47 x 10(6) events with a photon candidate with transverse energy E-T > 25 GeV, we find 617 events with (sic)(T) > 25 GeV and two or more jets with E-T > 15 GeV, at least one identified as originating from a b quark, versus an expectation of 607 +/- 113 event…

Supersymmetric particle model with additional bosonic coordinates

1986

A new supersymmetric particle model in enlarged superspace with additional bosonic coordinateszij,\(\bar z_{ij} \) (zij=−zji;i=1...N, N even) canonically conjugated to central charges is quantized. The superwave functions which are obtained through first quantization are the free superfields on the enlarged superspace\((x^\mu , \theta _{\alpha i} , \bar \theta _i^{\dot \alpha } , z_{ij} , \bar z_{ij} )\). Two particular cases (N=2 with one additional complex bosonic coordinate andN=8 with seven additional real coordinates) are considered in more detail.

Simpson's neutrino and the singular seesaw

1991

We derive explicit forms for the neutrino and lepton "mixing-matrices" which describe the generic singular see-saw model. The dependence on the hierarchy parameter is contrasted with the non-singular case. Application is made to Simpson's 17 keV neutrino.

Nuclear Interactions of 400 GeV Protons in Emulsion

1978

Abstract We report on 400 GeV proton-emulsion nucleus reactions and compare the results to hadron-nucleus reactions at smaller energies. In particular we present results on the emission of fast target protons (essentially grey track particles) and on their correlation with the number of collisions inside the nucleus, ν, with the number of charged evaporated particles (essentially black track particles) and with the number of pions produced (essentially shower particles). We observe that the main features of the 200–400 GeV data are very similar. However, we find that the mean shower-particle multiplicity at 400 GeV is essentially higher than expected from the simple independent particle mod…
